5th Century Roundel of Lord Vishnu

Terracotta roundel depicting Lord Vishnu on Garuda.

Period: Gupta period. 5th Century.

Currently at Norton Museum of Art, Florida.

The roundel represents the majestic four-armed Vishnu, protector and preserver of the universe. Sensitively modeled and wearing a crown, jewelry, and a loincloth, Vishnu holds two of his identifying attributes: a disc to review and a club to punish.
